March 2018

Serving the communities of Hook, Odiham, Hartley Wintney and the surrounding villages since 1987.

Our Club Secretary, Judith Goodchild,  went to Buckingham Palace to celebrate our Centenary. Here is her account of the event.

I did make it there and back safely!  The weather in London was awful with a lot of snow.  I met up with Helen Bellamy from Hart, James Powell from Fleet and Neil Bray from Yateley.  The idea was to have a photo taken outside the palace but the weather stopped this.  Richard from Farnborough was one of the official photographers and Linda Picton was one of the organising committee so the Zone was well represented.

The evening was great fun and enjoyable.  We could mingle with everyone and I met up with a lot of friends.  The formal part of the evening was quite short.  Sophie ( Countess of Wessex),  Patron of Lions, welcomed us and thanked us for all our work.  She said she had watched us coming into the Palace and that we all looked pretty miserable because of the weather.  As she said if it had been the next evening she probably would have been on her own.  Phil Nathan responded and went over what we have achieved during the Centennial.  He then presented Sophie with a Melvin Jones Fellowship which very much surprised her.  She then thanked us for the MJF before chatting to individuals.  We were supposed to separate so that there was a path way down the middle of the room but it was very difficult to keep this clear.  I did manage to speak to her.

Afterwards James, Neil and myself set off to find a taxi to take us back to Waterloo.  We got there just in time to catch the 8:39.  We found seats and suddenly realised that we were sharing the carriage with some Fleet Lions and partners.  They had been to see 42nd Street.  For a few minutes it was quite noisy!

Thank you so much for allowing me to represent you on this wonderful occasion.  It is an evening I will always remember

Best regards,
