Current Status

Hook and Odiham Lions were planning to hold their first prostate cancer screening (PCS) event on 20th May, at The Odiham Cottage Hospital, to test up to 200 men with a simple 3-minute blood test. Following the recent government COVID-19 advice, and in the interests of public safety, Hook & Odiham Lions have now postponed this event and, currently, are planning to hold it later in 2020. In the meantime, please use the attached Prostate Cancer UK link to learn more and check the symptoms.    LINK FOR INFORMATION          https://prostatecanceruk.org/

Why Prostate Cancer Screening?

Prostate cancer is now the biggest killer of men in the UK. Prostate cancer generally affects men over 50 and is rare in younger men. More than 47,500 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. It is very important to catch prostate cancer early ….. many men are reluctant to get tested and wait until it has spread and then it is more difficult to treat. Whilst the test is not absolutely definitive it can provide an early warning of prostate cancer that is still at a curable stage but without displaying any symptoms.

This will be a FREE event to offer men, aged 45-70, to come along to check for early signs of possible prostate cancer.  As well as being free the event will be totally confidential.

How will the test work? A simple 3-minute blood test will be taken, by experienced practitioners, to measure prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels. Each man will be informed of his PSA score with advice on what to do next.

Our PCS event will be more than just testing. It is also about awareness of the disease, the benefits of being tested and an understanding of the relevant symptoms.  Although we are only planning to test 200 men, we want to increase understanding and awareness and hope to get the message through to over 1,000 people, as a result of a ‘ripple process’, from those who attend on the day.
