Introduction

The Village Connect Trail, first devised last year as a post COVID opportunity for our communities to get out in the fresh air and raise money through sponsorship, has been revised and improved this year in line with the feedback we received from last year's participants. It is a mostly rural, circular route, about 15.4 miles in length connecting Hartley Wintney, Hook and Odiham, with three additional shorter 5 mile circular routes, one for each of the three main villages, and each one connecting to other villages not covered by the main route. Walkers will choose their preferred route. This year participants' sponsorships will raise money for local schools and for The Lions Ukraine Appeal.

This year we have included a Walk Spotting Checklist of things to spot as you go along as we thought that this might appeal to any younger children taking part.

How it works

Anyone and everyone who is fit and able enough and has an interest in helping a local school of their choice, whether they are current or past pupils, parents, teachers, local clubs and organisations, anyone interested in our local schools, or who perhaps just want a pleasant walk in our beautiful local countryside are invited to apply for entry to the event. Apply to the Hook & Odiham Lions Club (details below) to be given a trail map and instructions, after which it is your job to raise sponsorship money for the school of your choice which will give a proportion (of their choosing) of the funds that they raise to the Lions Ukraine Appeal. Any money raised and donated directly to the Lions Club will be given in total to the Ukraine Appeal.

Applications and registration should be made through Village Connect Trail web page on this Hook & Odiham Lions website. There you can set up your own account by following the website instructions, giving your name, the school to which you wish the funds to be sent and the anticipated number of people in your group taking part. If you prefer to collect cash sponsorship instead, then of course you are at liberty to do this and transfer the money later to the Lions Club. The links on the web page will connect you to each school's Just Giving web page through which sponsorship is made for each school.

Participants, as groups or individuals, will start walking from any one of the three registration gazebos on the trail route that is convenient to them, in either direction on the route and at a time on the day that they choose. It could be that you just want to go with the family for a short walk, maybe have a picnic somewhere, or perhaps walk from one village to the next, or if you feel fit enough complete the whole 15.4-mile trail! The routes altogether connect nine villages and have a total length of 31.4 miles. There is ample opportunity along the routes to purchase refreshments and take a rest.

How to apply

Please register your interest on the Hook & Odiham Lions Club website and pay the group £5.00 registration fee to gain access to the route map, further route instructions, risk assessments and safety advice. Please register your name, contact details, number of participants in your group and the name of the school for which you are raising money.  Links to the Just Giving sponsorship pages for each school can then be accessed. The route map can then be printed off, together with the Walk Checklist, to carry with you on the day or be used from your mobile device. As a last resort, registration can be made on the day at one of the Lions / Rotary gazebos. However, please make sure that you check-in at one of the gazebos on the day prior to starting out to confirm your participation.
